How the 911 System Works

When a wire line 911 call comes into the call center, a sophisticated system of computers, phone equipment and highly trained personnel is activated. As the call taker answers the call, the caller's name, address and phone number are displayed on a computer screen. This ensures that even if the caller is unable to speak, emergency crews can be dispatched to the caller's location.

The call taker answers the with, "911 - Where is you emergency?" This verifies the information on the screen, so if the call is disconnected the location is known. The call taker then gathers additional information, such as the nature of the emergency, medical conditions, or the presence of dangerous conditions.

As the call taker gathers the information, it is relayed by computer to the dispatcher. The dispatcher coordinates incident response by contacting the appropriate agencies, relaying information to them by radio, monitoring responder safety, and dispatching additional crews when needed.
